Tutorial 003.

  • Tutorial for PSP9, should be easily translatable to older versions and possibly PS.
  • Please do not reproduce the icon exactly. No one wants to see a load of icons that look the same.
  • Requested by [info]lalla32

  • Textures by Tre-xture
  • Brush by [info]blimey_icons
  • Promo pic from New Atlantis

    This tutorial incorporates elements of a tutorial by [info]frostthepie, which can be found here.

    Step One:

    Crop your image to 100x100 and sharpen. Duplicate and set the top Layer to screen.

    Merge both Layers.

    ---->

    Step Two:

    Add a new Layer and colour fill with #222d66, set to Exclusion at 100% Opacity.

    ---->

    Step Three:

    Add another new Layer and Colour fill with #7ac7de, set to Soft Light at 100% Opacity.

    ---->

    Step Four:

    Copy Merge all Layers - do not merge - by Ctrl Shift C.

    Add as a new top Layer (Ctrl L) and set to Burn, 64% Opacity.

    ---->

    Step Five:

    Duplicate the base Layer, set to Soft Light and place underneath the top Burn Layer.

    Merge all Layers.

    ---->

    Step Six:

    Adjust > Colour Balance > Colour Balance >
    Colour Levels -7:17:26/Midtones/Preserve Luminance.

    ---->

    Step Seven:

    Adjust > Colour Balance > Colour Balance >
    Colour Levels 40:48:55/Midtones/Preserve Luminance.

    ---->

    Step Eight:

    Add a new Layer, colour fill with #e0e0e0 and set to Burn.

    Merge Layers.

    ---->

    Step Nine:

    Add a texture on a new Layer, set to Multiply.

    ----> ---->

    Step Ten:

    Duplicate the bottom Layer, set to Soft Light and set as the top Layer.

    ---->

    Step Eleven:

    Add a new Layer, colour fill with #e0e0e0 and set to Burn.

    Merge Layers.

    ---->

    Step Twelve:

    Adjust > Colour Balance > Colour Balance >
    Colour Levels 40:48:55/Midtones/Preserve Luminance.

    ---->

    Step Thirteen:

    Open another texture in a new window.

    Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Hue/Saturation/Lightness > Hue -180/Saturation -100/Lightness 0.

    ---->

    Step Fourteen:

    Copy the above texture and add as the top Layer, set to Hard Light.

    ---->

    Step Fifteen:

    Duplicate the bottom Layer, set to Multiply at 84% Opacity and set as top Layer.

    ---->

    Step Sixteen:

    Change the Colour in your pallet to Pattern and select the icon you're working on. Add a new Layer and using this brush, by [info]blimey_icons, select a section from the left hand side of the icon.

    Drop the Layer down around 12 px and move it to the right so it overlaps Rodney's face.

    Merge Layers.

    ----> ---->

    Step Seventeen:

    Crop the side of Rodney's face and add as a new top Layer.

    Image > Resize > 85 % - making sure you've un-ticked the 'Resize All Layers' box - and Sharpen.

    Move the Layer over to the right so it sits on top of the previous Layer.

    ---->

    Step Seventeen:

    Lastly, on a new Layer, add some small text.

    SlimSansSerif - Size 1 - Kerning 100 - Opacity 54%.

    ---->

    And that's it, your done.

    Any problems, or if I haven't explained anything properly, just gimme a shout.

    Hum... wow... all those layers... I need to try this out... @_@ I have never been able to use so many color fill layers... I always get those weird colors and throw everything away... but a soft light layer under the burn one does miracles I see. I'm going to try this... thank you so much, darling! :)

    That's a fantastic tutorial, I'm always hopeless at getting cropped areas and duplicate images to work, so I shall have a play with this, and see if I can find something that works for me.

    Thankyou so much for taking the time to do this tutorial.

    When translating it for PS7, there are a few errors, and things start to go wrong when adjusting the Color Balance, but I'm just about to try this in PSP8, and hope to achieve the same effect as you.

    Oh and can I just ask whether or not the textures you used were your own? They're uber spiffy.

    I tried it with my Natalie icon, and it worked well; save the face that the picture might not have been the best choice to use. It really was a great tut. Saving to mems.

    Wonderful tutorial! One question: in step sixteen, how would you use a brush to select something? I'm not totally clear on that.
